In most cases, doctors do not know the direct causes for high blood pressure. But they do know the risk factors for high blood pressure and ways to treat it effectively.

A risk factor is something that can make a person more likely to get a health problem such as high blood pressure.

There are many risk factors for high blood pressure. Some cannot be controlled, and some can be controlled. That’s good to know. Learn which risk factors you can control, and what small steps you can take to do something about them.

Risk factors you CANNOT control
  • Your age. People are more likely to get high blood pressure as they get older. More than half of Americans 60 years and older have high blood pressure
  • Your race/ethnicity. Some ethnic groups, such as African Americans, are more likely to get high blood pressure. In these groups, high blood pressure often occurs earlier in life and is more severe
  • Your family history. People are more likely to get high blood pressure if they have a close family member that has it
Risk factors you CAN control
  • Your medicines. Some medicines can increase blood pressure. Be sure to talk with your doctor about the medicines you are taking. Do not stop taking your medicine without first talking with your doctor
  • Your health. Some health problems may increase blood pressure
  • Your other habits. You may be at risk for high blood pressure if you:
    • Do not get any physical activity
    • Drink too much alcohol
    • Eat too many salty foods
    • Smoke
    • Have too much stress
